1- Defining News
News. A word we have all probably heard at least once in our lives, but if I had to guess we have all heard it more than that. For some, the news is what the old men discuss at the diner early in the morning over coffee. For others, news is the background noise that plays on the TV, then there are some who are completely consumed by it in their day-to-day lives. So just what is news?
When I think about what news is, the only thing that comes to mind is a piece of information that is new to me. Whether it comes from the town gossip or CNN, It is something that you don't know, that you may, or may not need to know. News can be as big as discussing new laws, keeping up with war efforts across the globe, or discussing wildfires and other major weather events. The news can even be as small as a school paper and even the lack of news can be news; ever heard the saying, "No news is good news "?
The Google dictionary defines news as, " /no͞oz/ noun, newly received or noteworthy information, especially about recent or important events. " News is variable, what's news to me might not be news to you. The most important thing of all, when it comes to news, is making sure that it is true and credible. There is just as much fake news out in the world as there is true news so it's important to always consume information carefully so you are not misled by lies.
